How to Replace a Pontiac Intake Manifold Gasket

The intake manifold of a Pontiac vehicle is a feature of the engine that provides a mixture of fuel and air to the vehicle's cylinders. When replacing the intake manifold on a Pontiac, you must replace all worn parts with new ones, including the manifold gasket. Care should be taken when replacing the manifold to ensure there is no damage to the engine or the manifold itself.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set with sockets
  • Gasket scraper
  • Screwdriver
  • Intake manifold gasket
  • Antifreeze
  • Drain pan or small bucket
  • Pencil/pen and paper

Removal

  • Remove the negative battery cable using the wrench. The negative cable on the battery will be marked "NEG" of with the negative (-) symbol.

  • Place the drain pan or small bucket beneath the radiator drain plug.

  • Remove the closure bolt with the wrench and drain the radiator. The drain plug is located on the bottom of the radiator.

  • Unscrew the clamps connecting the induction hose and pull to remove it. The induction hose is located across the top of the manifold.

  • Detach the wiring to the throttle body, MAP sensor and the wastegate, making sure to label each.

  • Disconnect the PVC hose, the vacuum hoses and the throttle body and label each.

  • Disconnect the throttle cable and the cruise control cable if your vehicle is so equipped.

  • Disconnect the fuel line from the throttle cable support bracket, the ignition coil and the coil bracket and label each cable.

  • Disconnect the vacuum line from the rear of the manifold and remove the transaxle fuel tube and manifold support brackets.

  • Remove the transaxle fuel tube and manifold support brackets.

  • Remove the heater tube support bracket. The heater tube support bracket is located on the lower side of the manifold.

  • Disconnect the fuel injection and remove the coolant recovery tank, the power steering adjusting bracket and the alternator front adjusting bracket with the wrench.

  • Disconnect the fuel rail-to-fuel inlet fitting and detach the fuel line from the regulator outlet.

  • Remove the nuts, screws and washers using the wrench and screwdriver, then lift the old manifold from the engine.

  • Scrap the gasket housing clean using the gasket scraper. Be sure that you do not let any debris fall into the engine during the cleaning process.

  • Place the new gasket and manifold into position and reinstall the washers, nuts and screws back onto the manifold.

Reinstall

  • Reconnect the fuel line to the regulator outlet and the fuel rail inlet.

  • Reconnect the power steering pump bracket to the cylinder head and block, fasten the alternator front adjusting bracket and the power steering adjusting bracket.

  • Reinstall the alternator and the accessory drive belt.

  • Install the coolant recovery tank and connect the fuel injector wires.

  • Connect the heater tube support bracket using the wrench. The bracket should be connected on the lower side of the manifold.

  • Install the transaxle fill tube brackets and the manifold support using the wrench.

  • Reattach the vacuum hose, install the ignition coil bracket and attach the labeled wires.

  • Reconnect the fuel return line to the throttle cable support bracket and attach the throttle cable and the cruise control cable (if applicable).

  • Reconnect the vacuum hose to the throttle body, reinstall the PCV hose and fasten the wiring to the wastegate.

  • Fasten the MAP sensor and the throttle body.

  • Reconnect the induction tube and hoses.

  • Reconnect the bolt to the radiator and refill with coolant.
