How to Install Northstar Engine Water Pump Pulleys

Installing a water pump pulley to replace a faulty or warped one on a Northstar Cadillac engine will only take a few minutes. Once a pulley goes bad, it can cause serious damages to the water pump. This will make the water pump fail to deliver coolant throughout the engine, causing serious damages to the Northstar engine. You don't need any special tools to carry out this repair.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set
  • Open the hood for access to the engine compartment. Unbolt the air cleaner from the top of the engine with a socket wrench. Place it to the side.

  • Unbolt the radiator shield from the top of the engine with a socket wrench. This will provide easy access to the pulley and the belt.

  • Push the tensioner pulley in the center of the engine down with the socket wrench. There will be a notch at the end of the pulley to place the socket wrench into. Pull the belt off the water pump pulley. The pulley is located directly under the tensioner.

  • Unbolt the pulley with a socket wrench. There will be four bolts holding the pulley in place. Pull the old pulley off the shaft by hand.

  • Push the new pulley on to the shaft. Tighten the four bolts with a socket wrench.

  • Push the tensioner down with the socket wrench. Place the belt over the pulley and release the tensioner to tighten the belt.

  • Install the radiator cover back over the radiator with a socket wrench. Position the air cleaner box onto the top of the engine and tighten the bolts with a socket wrench.
