Chrysler 727 Overhaul Tips

The 727 transmission, sometimes called a torqueflite, provided the power for most Chrysler vehicles from 1956 to the early 1990s. The A-727 model, found mostly in large trucks and other vehicles that need massive amounts of power, uses an aluminum case and includes a special pawl parking lock.

Safety

  • Stay safe by working in a well-lit location with appropriate ventilation. Wear work gloves, rubber-soled shoes, goggles and a long-sleeved shirt to protect your body. If possible, work in an open garage or a covered parking lot. Always disconnect the negative terminal of the battery from the negative battery cable before beginning any overhaul or repair.

Transmission Rebuild Kits

  • Some automobile parts companies offer kits especially designed for rebuilding a 727 transmission. These kits include filters, bolts, clutches, gaskets, O-rings and seals and are available in a variety of styles, from traditional rebuild kits to racing rebuilds.

Reference

  • Since the rebuild of a 727 is so complex, take as many pictures of the transmission, as possible, during the disassembly process. Open the hood of your vehicle and take pictures of the transmission in the engine bay. After you remove the transmission, take pictures from the front, back and sides. Most experienced users suggest using a manual when rebuilding a 727 transmission. A manual includes wiring diagrams and step-by-step instructions and often saves you time and aggravation.

Transmission Removal

  • Drain the transmission before attempting to remove it. Start the removal process by detaching the coolant lines, the kickdown lever and the speedo cable. Part by part, disconnect all of the engine parts that attach to the transmission or sit in front oft he transmission. This task typically requires an instruction manual for appropriate diagrams and specific instructions.

Transmission Disassembly

  • The 727 must be disassembled from front to rear. Begin the process by removing the torque convertor, shift lever connections and tranny pan. Continue the process by removing the transmission pan and pump. Disassemble the input shafts, starting with the first shaft and moving on to the second and third. Disassemble the output shafts and rear of the transmission last.

Transmission Rebuild

  • Use a transmission rebuild stand or a solid work bench. Make sure your bearing is the correct size for the 727. For the rebuild, start with the housing then move on to the input housing. After the input housing, install the output and pump housing. Install the valve body, lever brackets and torque converter last.
