How Do I Change My Gl1500 Speedometer Cable?

The speedometer is a gauge located in the instrument cluster of your Honda Gl1500. It displays a speed reading, a measurement from the speed sensor, and translates that measurement into miles per hour. A fully functioning speedometer is essential in order to maintain vehicle safety. If you've recently inspected your Honda Gl1500 speedometer to troubleshoot a squeaking sound coming from your gauge and found that you have a faulty or damaged cable, replacing the speedometer cable is a relatively simple process.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Screwdrivers
  • Stand on the left side of the bike, behind the handlebars and bend down. Remove the side disc cover, a removable cover that helps maintain clearance in between the wheel and the hub. Remove the fender cover by gently pulling at the grommet that connects the covers to the bike's frame. And remove the metal holder for the brake cable by unscrewing the screws that are screwed through the holder into the the bikes frame. Make a note of the original positioning of the the metal holder for the brake cable. If reinstalled incorrectly, the fender cover won't fit properly.

  • Use a screwdriver and unscrew the speedometer housing from underneath the gauge panel. Use the wrench and unscrew the bolt that connects the speedometer cable to the back of the speedometer.

  • Reach up under the instrument cluster and turn the bolt counterclockwise to completely disconnect the cable. Set the bolt aside. Disconnect the cable from the forks and remove the cable completely.

  • Place the bolt back on, feed the new cable into the back of the speedometer and tighten the bolt. Reattach the cable onto the forks. Put the side disc cover, fender cover and the metal holder back into place. Follow manufacturer's instructions for calibrating the speedometer before you take your Honda for a ride.
