How to Replace a 3100 Intake Manifold Gasket

The General Motors 3100 V6 engine is used in many GM vehicles. Like other engine blocks, the 3100 uses an intake to suck air into the engine to create combustion. Once the air is brought in through the intake, it is sent to the intake manifold. The intake manifold is a separate piece that connects to the engine block with bolts. To ensure a secure fit without any leaks, gaskets are placed between the metal of the intake manifold and the engine blocks. The process for replacing these gaskets is the same on every engine.

Things You'll Need

  • 3100 replacement gaskets
  • Gasket adhesive
  • Torque wrench
  • Use the gasket scraper to scrape the old gasket off the intake manifold. Make sure to remove all the glue debris left behind from the gasket.

  • Use a fiberless rag to remove any dust or dirt from the engine block where the intake gasket sits. The fiberless rag will make sure that no small particles of the rag are left on the block.

  • Place a small amount of gasket adhesive around the bolt holes on the intake gasket. Alternatively, you can spray the entire backing of the gasket with adhesive.

  • Place the gasket onto the engine block, lining up the bolt holes where the intake manifold will be attached. Allow the gasket to set for five minutes.

  • Place more gasket adhesive on the side of the gasket that is now facing upward and place the intake manifold back onto the engine block. Tighten its bolts using the torque wrench.
