How to Wire Dual 4 Ohm Voice Coil Subwoofers

If your subwoofer is a dual voice coil (DVC) design, it will have two sets of speaker wire terminals, rather than the single pair found on most speakers. A DVC design gives the owner the opportunity to wire the subwoofer for different impedances. By wiring the two speaker wire terminals in parallel, the resistance of a 4-ohm DVC drops to 2 ohms. By wiring in series, the resistance is increased to 8 ohms. The physical connections are easy to make--you just need to know which wire to hook where.

Things You'll Need

  • Speaker wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire strippers

Parallel Wiring (2-ohm Resistance)

  • Cut a length of speaker wire that's long enough to span the distance between the two sets of speaker terminals on the subwoofer with a set of wire cutters. Separate the two speaker wire leads on each end of the speaker wire and remove 1/2-inch of insulation from each end.

  • Connect the two positive terminals on the subwoofer together with one lead of the speaker wire. The positive terminals will be marked with a (+) sign and will be colored red. Press down on each terminal to open a hole in the terminal post. Slip the bare end of the wire into the hole and release the terminal to clamp the wire in place.

  • Attach the two negative terminals on the subwoofer together with the other lead of the speaker wire. The negative terminals will be marked with a (-) sign and will be colored black. Press down on each terminal to open a hole in the terminal post. Slip the bare end of the wire into the hole and release the terminal to clamp the wire in place.

Series Wiring (8-ohm Impedance)

  • Cut a length of speaker wire that's long enough to span the distance between the two sets of speaker terminals on the subwoofer with a set of wire cutters. Separate the two speaker wire leads on each end of the speaker wire and remove 1/2-inch of insulation from each end.

  • Connect the positive terminal on one set of the subwoofer's speaker terminals to the negative terminal on the other set of speaker terminals. The positive terminals will be marked with a (+) sign and will be colored red, and the negative terminals will be marked with a (-) terminal and colored black. Press down on each terminal to open a hole in the terminal post. Slip the bare end of the wire into the hole and release the terminal to clamp the wire in place.

  • Attach the positive terminal on the other set of the subwoofer's speaker terminals to the negative terminal on the first set of speaker terminals. Press down on each terminal to open a hole in the terminal post. Slip the bare end of the wire into the hole and release the terminal to clamp the wire in place.
