How to Wire a Vortec V6 Spark Plug

The Vortec V6 is a six-cylinder piston engine designed and manufactured by General Motors. The Vortec V6 can be found in Chevrolet and other GM name brand trucks, vans and sports cars. The Vortec comes equipped with spark plugs to ignite the gasoline vapor to start the engine smoothly. Spark plugs are connected to the ignition coil with specialized spark plug wires. Over time, the wires may need to be replaced so it's important to learn the proper way to wire the Vortec spark plugs.

Things You'll Need

  • Spark plug removal tool
  • Replacement spark plug wires
  • Open the hood to access the Vortec V6 engine. If the vehicle was recently driven wait a half hour before attempting any maintenance on the engine or surrounding components. Locate the spark plugs; the Votec V6 is a 6-cylinder engine equipped with six spark plugs and corresponding wires.

  • Remove the spark plug wires from the original packaging. Lay each wire flat in order from shortest to longest. It's important to replace one wire at a time. This will ensure wires do not get mixed up and placed on the wrong spark plug.

  • Grasp the current spark plug wire at the base of the plug with the spark plug removal tool. Tug the tool swiftly to remove the wire. Trace the wire to the ignition coil. Unplug the wire from the coil terminal.

  • Lay the old wire over the new wires to determine the exact length match. Plug the matched new plug wire into the spark plug. Follow the same route the previous wire had. Connect the opposite end of the wire into the ignition coil. Repeat this process for each spark plug wire.

  • Check each newly installed wire to ensure they are all firmly seated in the spark plug base and ignition coil. Once finished, close the hood of the Vortec engine.
