How to Remove the Window Shades From a BMW X-5

The BMW X-5 offers a sunshade option for the rear quarter panel windows. If you need to access the area inside the rear doors, the trim panel with the sunshade attached will need to be removed. Removing the panel is not difficult and can be done in a few minutes using simple tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Small crowbar
  • Right angle pick
  • Find the screw in the recessed area in the bottom section of the door. Remove it with the screwdriver and set the screw aside.

  • Remove the trim panel behind the door latch using a small crowbar. The trim panel is held on by four plastic posts. Start at the narrow end and pop the panel out.

  • Remove the two screws behind the panel using the screwdriver. Set the screws aside.

  • Find the small hole at the top of the window frame where the sunshade is located. There is a metal clip inside the hole.

  • Insert the end of the angle pick in the hole and lever the clip upwards. The frame with the sunshade will pop out and you simply lift it up to remove it. Remove the screw at the bottom of the frame and you can remove the interior door panel.
