The intake manifold on your BMW E36 improves your engine's efficiency by moving a constant stream of ignitable materials to the cylinder ports. If the intake manifold falters, your engine will perform less efficiently. Furthermore, intake manifold failure can also affect your vehicle's accessories, such as the power steering and cruise control. This happens because the downward motion of the pistons no longer initiates a partial vacuum within the manifold itself. Under normal conditions, this limited vacuum provides extra power for a number of accessories.
Disconnect the negative battery cable using a ratchet and socket, then unbolt the plastic air box from the intake manifold using a ratchet and socket.
Unscrew the air intake hose bracket using a flathead screwdriver, then remove the air box.
Unplug the air sensor that is connect the air box, then remove the throttle cable from the manifold by hand. Pull the second air sensor from the top of the intake manifold, then unbolt the first section of the intake manifold using a ratchet and socket. Unbolt the second section of the intake manifold.
Finish the removal procedure by pulling the metal tube out that connects the intake manifold to the engine.
