How to Replace a Miata Convertible Top

Produced with Japanese engineering and styling, the Mazda Miata is a two-door convertible with a convertible top that is changeable. The Mazda Miata’s convertible top can be removed when it is old or worn out and a new convertible top can be installed to provide a more appealing look to your Miata. You can operate on your Mazda Miata’s convertible top at the comfort of your own garage, without having to go a mechanic, by pursuing the following procedure.

Things You'll Need

  • Fender covers
  • Masking tape
  • Pieces of paper
  • Philips screwdriver
  • Slotted screwdriver
  • Flat-blade screwdriver
  • Rivet gun
  • Metric socket wrench
  • Pliers
  • Shelter the body of your Miata with fender covers and then tape up some paper at the rear window’s sides of the new convertible top.

  • Withdraw the clips and the Philips screws from the rear deck, spinning a Philips screwdriver counterclockwise and then withdraw your Miata’s rear carpeting.

  • Withdraw the rain rail’s clips and 10 mm nuts from the rear of your Miata, spinning a metric socket wrench counterclockwise, and then pull to withdraw the all of the rear bars.

  • Grab the front portion of the Miata top and bring it down to the center, and withdraw the screws from your Miata’s set plate, spinning a slotted screwdriver counterclockwise, then withdraw the molding and the weather strips mounts away from your Miata, spinning a Philips screwdriver, counterclockwise.

  • Withdraw your Miata’s fabric rivets using a rivet gun and then withdraw the cable by taking apart the spring and screw from your Miata’s cable, spinning a slotted screwdriver counterclockwise.

  • Hold a flat-blade screwdriver to the center of the top’s bows and grab and withdraw the fabric off the top, withdraw the rain rail’s rivets using a rivet gun and then withdraw the bolts away from the rain rail with a metric socket wrench.

  • Reassemble the rain rail to the new Miata top by placing the rivets and bolts into the slots that are marked. Grab the top and set it over the Mazda’s frame, set the cable with the strings attached to the top’s sides, set in the set plate, weather strip, and rear portion of the top in place with the back slot, and fasten it with pliers.
