Tow bars can be an invaluable aftermarket option for your Jeep, especially if you intend to travel long distances with another vehicle or trailer in tow. There are many different types of tow bars on the market today that will likely fit your Jeep, so before purchasing your tow bar it's worth it to shop around a bit. You need to make sure the tow bar you purchase is compatible for your model of Jeep, so the easiest bet for this aftermarket add-on is to purchase a "universal fit" tow bar that will fit on practically any vehicle. Once you've found a bar, installation is a snap.
Park your Jeep on a flat surface and engage the parking brake.
Measure both the bumper of your Jeep and the length of the tow bar with a tape measure. Place the tow bar flat against your jeep's bumper.
Remove your Jeep's front bumper. First locate the mounting bolts on the inside of the frame. Remove them with a socket set. Lift bumper off and set it aside.
Hold the universal tow bar flat up against your frame to see if its mounting holes match up with the mounting holes on your Jeep's frame. If the tow bar is truly a universal fitting bar, the holes should line up. However, if they do not simply mark the location of your tow bar's holes against your frame.
If the mounting holes on both your frame and the tow bar line up, slip your mounting bolts through them both and tighten them. However, if they do not line up continue to the next step.
Place safety goggle on and drill a new mounting holes on your frame where you marked earlier with the chalk. Once the holes are drilled insert the mounting bolt through the frame and tow bar and tighten them firmly with the socket set.
