How to Check Voltage to a Knock Sensor

A knock sensor is a vital component of your car. If you've ever wondered how a modern car determines the appropriate air-to-fuel mixture in the engine, it is because of the knock sensor. It's crucial to maintain a good mixture of air and gasoline to achieve the most efficient combustion power inside your engine cylinders. Checking the voltage of your knock sensor is a good idea if you are worried it might not be functioning properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Voltmeter
  • Locate the knock sensor and look for the two metal leads where the sensor connects to your car. Refer to the owner's manual or a repair manual for your car to determine the location of the knock sensor, as it varies from one car model to another.

  • Switch on the voltmeter and touch one of its probes to one of the leads on your knock sensor.

  • Touch the other probe from your voltmeter to the other lead on your knock sensor.

  • Keep both probes in contact with the metal leads and your voltmeter will display the current voltage reading in your knock sensor.
