How to Adjust Electric Chokes on Holley Carbs

Electric chokes on Holley carburetors are on the passenger side of the carburetor's main body. They have adjustment notches that allow you to retard or advance the opening of the choke during a cold start by hand. The choke cap (which heats the fuel as it enters the carburetor chambers) is one of two adjustment points, the second being the fast idle cam. From the factory, the fast idle cam idles the engine at 1500 to 1600 RPM. You can adjust this cam if your engine requires a higher idle RPM.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Voltage switch
  • 1/4-inch open-end wrench
  • Loosen the three choke cap screws with a Phillips screwdriver, but do not remove the screws. The electric choke body is on the passenger side of the carb as it sits on the intake manifold.

  • Turn the choke cap counterclockwise if the choke is opening too quickly, indicated by difficulty starting, or clockwise if the choke is opening too late, indicated by stalling after starting. The choke assembly has adjustment notches that allow you to make single-click adjustments.

  • Tighten the choke cap locking screws with a screwdriver.

  • Connect the positive terminal of the choke to a voltage switch, and ensure an "off" ignition results in 0 volts, while an "on" ignition generates 12 volts.

  • Let the choke cool until its fully closed and pull the throttle cable to "wide open," revealing the fast idle set screw behind the choke body. Rotate the fast idle set screw, using a 1/4-inch open-end wrench, clockwise to increase or counterclockwise to decrease the engine RPM.
