Troubleshooting a Ford F150 EGR Valve

The F150 is a full-sized pickup truck designed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company. The F150 has an EGR valve installed to control the exhaust gasses. The exhaust gas recirculation valve directs the exhaust gasses into the intake manifold, where the exhaust is cooled before entering the engine. This process keeps the engine clean and running smoothly. If you suspect your EGR valve has failed, it is important to troubleshoot it properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Owner's manual
  • Park your F150 and allow the vehicle to cool. If the truck was driven for an extended period of time, allow up to one hour for the components to cool.

  • Open the hood of the F150 and locate the EGR valve. The valve is located near the firewall, in the center of the engine block. The valve is identified as a mushroom-type metal valve. The valve has vacuum hose on top. Refer to your owner's manual for a diagram, if needed.

  • Turn the engine on and watch the EGR valve. The plunger mechanism should move up and down smoothly. The plunger mechanism controls the exhaust gasses being circulated into the engine. If the plunger fails to function properly, the valve is faulty and should be replaced or cleaned immediately.
