How to Hook Up a Holley Carburetor

Hooking up a Holley high performance carburetor is a straightforward process thanks to Holley's 107 years of carburetor manufacturing. Whether you have a small block or large block engine, double barrel, 4-barrel spread bore, or a 4-barrel square bore intake, Holley has a carburetor for your vehicle. Holley is known for their high performance carburetors, but also for their participation in the "do-it-yourself" section of the aftermarket high performance industry. Holley even has a complete YouTube channel dedicated to carburetor installation, education and product information.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Evaluate the type of intake manifold your vehicle has. If it's a double barrel intake, unbolt and remove the stock intake, and replace it with a 4-barrel intake manifold -- sealing and bolting it to the engine. Ensure that you choose an intake that matches the bolt pattern of the Holley carburetor to be installed. If your vehicle has a 4-barrel spread bore or 4-barrel square bore, ensure your Holley carburetor is compatible with that intake.

  • Clean the carburetor mounting surface and ensure that no debris is in the plenum area of the intake.

  • Thread the four corner mounting studs in by hand and tighten slightly with a pair of pliers. Then, place the carburetor gasket down over the studs and the mounting surface.

  • Place the new Holley carburetor on the intake, sliding the studs through the carburetors stud holes. For carburetors with bolts instead of studs, place the carburetor on the gasket, align the gasket and carburetor holes with the intake holes and screw the bolts into place.

  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the carburetor bolts or stud nuts to 60-80 inch-pounds or 4-5 foot-pounds. Ensure that you tighten the bolts in a diagonal fashion, moving from one corner to the opposite corner, until the bolts are tight.

  • Set the air cleaner base plate on the carburetor body, set the air filter on top of the base plate, set the cover on top of the air filter and screw the wing nut into place to secure the air filter to the carburetor. Close the hood to ensure there are no clearance issues with the new carburetor. If clearance is an issue, the intake, carburetor or air cleaner model will need to be changed to a lower profile version.

  • Locate the throttle linkage cable and bracket that comes out of the fire wall and bolt it on to the the driver's side of the carburetor. Ensure that the throttle cable connector matches the end piece of the cable for proper attachment to the throttle body. Install the spring between the throttle body and the cable mounting bracket, which will return the throttle to a closed position automatically.

  • Ensure the throttle opens and closes smoothly. If this is not the case, check the cable for kinks and lubricate the mounting bracket joint.

  • Connect the throttle cable linkage to the cable connector. Ensure that the throttle moves back and forth freely. The Holley carburetor is now complete hooked up.
