How to Unplug a Marker Light on a Jeep Wrangler

Disconnecting or unplugging a marker light on your Jeep Wrangler is necessary when you need to replace the bulb or to replace the marker light assembly. The electrical harness that the bulb plugs into is connected to the rear of the marker light assembly, making removal of the entirely assembly a requirement to do anything with the electrical connection or bulb. If you need to replace the assembly, you can get a replacement from a Jeep dealer or an aftermarket or used parts retailer. If you need only replacement bulbs, any auto parts store or large general retailer can supply you with the right ones.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Open the hood of your Jeep and locate the negative battery cable on the battery. Loosen the clamp bolt on the battery cable end with a wrench, then lift the battery cable off the battery and isolate it from the terminal.

  • Move to the front of the truck and locate the marker light on the fender. Remove the retaining screws from the face of the marker light assembly with a Phillips screwdriver, then pull the lens off the light and set it aside.

  • Pull the marker light housing out of the fender, then locate the bulb socket and wiring harness on the back of the assembly. Turn the socket counterclockwise, then separate the bulb and socket from the assembly.

  • Grasp the bulb and unplug it from the bulb socket. You can replace the bulb with a new one or reassemble the light with no bulb if you do not wish for it to come on when the lights are on; however, check local laws before leaving the bulb out.
