How to Remove POR15

POR15 is in automotive paint that produces a hard, rust-resistant finish. When it comes time to remove the paint, for whatever reason, the process is nearly the same as with any other paint, but it requires a little extra time and manual work. The surface of POR15 paint can have an almost rock-hard finish, which makes it difficult for paint stripper to penetrate. Any paint stripper will work for this job, but the POR15 Stripper may produce the best results, because it's made specially for this particular paint.

Things You'll Need

  • Paint thinner
  • Plastic paint scraper
  • #2 steel wool
  • Rubber gloves
  • Hose
  • Spray an even layer of paint stripper across the top of the painted surface. The sprayed portion of the surface should be noticeably more shiny than the rest.

  • Work your way down on the surface with the paint stripper. Make one even row at a time until you reach the bottom.

  • Stand away from the paint stripper and get fresh air while the stripper soaks in for 15 minutes. If the surface is lacquer paint, you only need to let it soak in for five minutes.

  • Apply a second coat of the paint stripper and let it soak in for an additional 15 minutes. Again, you only need to let it soak for five minutes if it's a lacquer finish.

  • Scrape the paint off with a plastic paint scraper. Start at the top and work your way down.

  • Apply a final coat of the paint stripper.

  • Put on a pair of rubber gloves and scrub the surface with #2 steel wool to loosen any hard-to-remove paint. Start at the bottom and work your way up.

  • Spray the surface with a hose to rinse away all paint and stripper residue.
