Changing the oil in your Dodge Caliber on a regular basis will help to prolong engine life and help maintain a high level of performance. When purchasing replacement oil and filters double check your owner's manual to be certain you are planning to use an acceptable replacement oil. As of 2010, Dodge recommends that replacement oil for the Dodge Caliber meets the Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395.
Gather all tools and supplies you need before beginning the oil change. Once the oil is drained you will not be able to start the car until the oil change is finished.
Locate a safe place to do the oil change. A location that is level with a firm surface is ideal. Make sure there is enough room to work around the car.
Set the car's parking brake.
Raise the front end using the Jack. Make sure there is enough clearance to work beneath the vehicle.
Set the jack stands so they sit flat against the floor and are braced against the car's frame. You may need to raise or lower the car to achieve proper contact between the jack stand and frame.
Locate the oil drain plug on the bottom of the engine.
Place the oil drip pan under the drain plug. Make sure the pan is large enough to hold all the oil your engine contains.
Remove the drain plug with the adjustable wrench. Let the oil drain until the flow comes to a stop.
Replace the drain plug and tighten with the wrench.
Move the drain pan under the oil filter.
Remove the old filter with the oil filter wrench. The used filter is full of oil so carefully place it in the drain pan and allow it to drain out.
Install the new filter. Tighten by hand in a clockwise direction. Using the filter wrench tighten it approximately 1/4 turn.
Remove the drain pan, tools, used supplies, and jack stands from beneath the car.
Lower the car to the ground with the jack.
Raise the hood and locate the oil fill cap. It is located on the valve cover. Remove the oil fill cap.
Check your owners manual to determine the exact amount of oil your Dodge Caliber requires. Add the new oil using the funnel.
Check the engine's oil level. Make certain the level is within the safe zone.
Dispose of the used oil and filter in accordance with your local laws.
