How to Replace the Rear Taillights on a Volvo XC90

Replacing a blown taillight bulb on the rear of your Volvo xc90 is important if one has stopped working. With brake or turn signal lights not functioning, drivers behind you will have no way to know you are stopping or turning, creating a dangerous condition. Replacement bulbs are readily available from any auto parts store or through the Volvo dealer and often come in packs of two for your convenience.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Ratchet
  • Open the tailgate of your XC90 and locate the panel inside the cargo area directly behind the taillight assembly. Grasp the catch on the panel and pull the panel loose.

  • Locate the retaining nuts on the back of the taillight assembly inside the opening. Remove the nuts with a socket and ratchet then pull the taillight assembly straight out the back of the car.

  • Locate the bulb socket on the back of the taillight assembly and turn it counterclockwise to unlock it from the assembly. Pull the socket and bulb out of the rear of the taillight assembly then pull the bulb out of the socket.

  • Discard the old bulb and push a new bulb into the bulb socket, making sure it seats firmly in the socket. Slide the new bulb and socket into the rear of the taillight assembly and turn it clockwise, locking it in place.

  • Position the taillight assembly on the rear of the car and push it in until the mounting studs slide through the holes in the body and the assembly sits tight against the car body. Install the retaining nuts onto the studs, tighten them with a ratchet and socket until they are snug.

  • Replace the access cover in the cargo area, snapping it in place. Close the tailgate and test the repair by turning on the headlight switch and verifying that the light illuminates.
