How to Troubleshoot a Factory Car Alarm

Though they are meant to protect your car from invaders, car alarms are not devoid of problems of their own. The most commonly experience car alarm issues are: the alarm going off for long periods of time or at inappropriate times, the car alarm not stopping once it has started, the alarm not activating itself and the alarm not going off when it is supposed to. With these steps, anyone can troubleshoot a car alarm without the help of a trained professional or an instruction manual.

  • Conduct a routine check of your car's systems. Don't assume the issue is with your alarm--oftentimes other problems are to blame. For example, if your car is not starting, you may need to replace your battery or starter.

  • Disable your alarm manually. Sometimes, you need to switch your alarm to valet mode to diagnose the problem. You can do this by putting the key in the ignition and holding the push key down until the switch stays a solid color.

  • Check your sensors. If your sensors are too sensitive, sometimes your alarm will go off at inappropriate times. This can be fixed by changing the settings on your sensors.

  • Turn off other devices in your car. Sometimes, things like cell phones, MP3 players and GPS devices can interfere with the service of your alarm system. Switching them off may solve your problem.
