How to Remove the Bottom Ball Joint Rivets on a Monte Carlo

Changing the bottom ball joint rivets on a Monte Carlo is not a fun process. But if you have to change them, you must remove the rivets. This article will explain how.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack Stands
  • Heavy-Duty Air Compressor
  • Safety Glasses
  • Ear Protection
  • Die Grinder with Cutting-Wheel Attachment
  • Air Chisel with Pointed and Rivet-Cutting Attachments
  • Determine which side of the rivet is the easiest to work on. There are two sides: the domed side and the flat end. Generally, it's easier to work on the flat end, but it depends on which side of the control arm is easier to access. If you're working on the floor, the top half will be easier to get to, but if you're on a lift, the bottom will have better access.

  • Cut an "X" shape into the head of the rivet with a die grinder with a cutting-wheel attachment. Cut through the rivet---but not through the surrounding material---so be careful when you're making the cuts. Always be sure to wear ear and eye protection.

  • Insert the rivet-cutting attachment into the air chisel.

  • Place the rivet-cutting attachment at the base of the rivet, between the rivet and the control arm. Brace yourself, pull the trigger and start to work away at the rivet. Cutting an "X" into the rivet beforehand makes cutting away at the rest of the rivet easier. Now you can remove it in four chunks instead of slowly working away at the entire thing.

  • Place the pointed attachment into the air chisel.

  • Put the point of the air chisel end onto the center of the rivet and brace yourself. Pull the trigger, making sure to keep the chisel centered. With a little bit of time, you can punch the rivet through.

  • Repeat for the other rivets. Then bolt in the new ball joint and the job is complete.
