How to Check the Transmission Fluid on a 2002 Impala

The transmission fluid and filter in 2002 Chevrolet Impalas should be changed every 100,000 miles. Change them every 50,000 miles if the Impala is driven in heavy traffic where temperatures regularly reach 90 degrees Fahrenheit, or if the Impala tows a trailer.

  • Park the Impala on level ground. Keep the engine running. Apply the parking brake.

  • Place your foot on the brake. Move the shift lever through each gear, pausing for about three seconds on each. Shift into park.

  • Open the hood. Idle the engine for five minutes.

  • Pull out the transmission fluid dipstick. It's near the rear of the engine, toward the center. The end of the dipstick is a red loop.

  • Wipe the dipstick with a clean rag or paper towel.

  • Replace the dipstick and wait three seconds.

  • Pull out the dipstick.

  • Inspect the end of the dipstick to see the fluid level. The fluid level should be within the cross-hatched area. If it is below this area, fluid must be added.
