How to Replace a Fuel Filter in a 1993 Toyota Corolla

The fuel filter on a 1993 Toyota Corolla is an important part of the fueling system. The filter helps keep the fuel clean, which helps protect the engine from wear and tear. Toyota recommends that you replace the fuel filter every 25,000 miles.. Changing the fuel filter on a 1993 Toyota Corolla is a relatively easy procedure.

Things You'll Need

  • New fuel filter
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Fuel line disconnect tool, part No. SST 09631-22020
  • Gloves
  • Protective eye wear
  • Park your 1993 Toyota Corolla in a well ventilated area on level ground. For added safety, engage the parking brake or apply tire stops to the wheels of the vehicle. Unscrew the gas filler cap on the driver's side to relieve the fuel pressure. Open the hood and disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

  • Lean into the engine compartment and inspect the driver's side of the engine from front to back. You will find the fuel filter mounted to the fuel line near the rear engine area. The filter is a black or silver cylinder with a black fuel-line attached to both ends.

  • Inspect the filter and locate the four clips located on its top. These are air-cleaner clips. Use your hands to loosen the hose-clamp bolts that secure the air-cleaner clips in place. Disconnect them from the filter and set them aside.

  • Slide the fuel filter out of the mounting bracket, noting that one remaining bolt attaches it to the fuel line. Remove this union bolt and its two accompanying gaskets. Disconnect the fuel line from the fuel filter. Repeat this process for the opposite end of the filter. If you have a hard time disconnecting the fuel line from the fuel filter with an adjustable wrench, use a special fuel line disconnect tool. Apply the tool to the union bolt and apply pressure until it loosens. Discard the old fuel filter.

  • Replace the old fuel filter with a new one. Connect the filter to the fuel line using either an adjustable wrench or the special disconnect tool. Attach the union bolt and gaskets to the fuel filter and mount the filter back to the mounting bracket. Apply the air cleaner clips on top of the filter.

  • Connect the negative cable to the battery. Replace the gas filler cap to the fuel tank. Turn the ignition on your Corolla and allow the car to run for a few minutes to pressurize the fuel system.
