How to Turn An Airbag Light Off on a Mini Cooper 2003

The airbag light in a 2003 Mini Cooper illuminates when the airbag computer determines that a problem exists within the airbag system. When the computer activates this light, it also disables the entire airbag system to prevent a malfunctioning component from potentially injuring one or more of the vehicle's occupants. This light must be turned off using an automotive scan tool connected to the Mini Cooper's diagnostic data port.

Things You'll Need

  • Automotive scan tool
  • Place the Mini's gear selector in park or first gear (manual transmission). Turn the ignition to the "OFF" position to shut down the engine. Turn the ignition back to the "ON" position, but do not start the vehicle.

  • Power on the automotive scan tool. Plug its data connector into the Mini's diagnostic data port located under the dashboard on the driver's side.

  • Select "Airbag" from the scan tool's main menu. Select "codes," then select "clear all codes."

  • Disconnect the scan tool from the Mini's diagnostic data port. Start the engine and verify that the airbag light is no longer illuminated.
