How to Replace the Filter on a Subaru Impreza

Air filters are necessary to provide clean air to the engine and cabin of your vehicle. When an air filter is dirty it will not filter dust and other particles adequately. Checking the air filter is a task required with all models of vehicle, including the Subaru Impreza. This vehicle has an air filter for the engine and also for the cabin. If the cabin air filter is dirty, it will need to be replaced with a new one.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Replacement cabin filter
  • Open the glove compartment and remove the contents.

  • Locate the screws securing the glove compartment to the dash. Two screws are located on the bottom of the glove compartment, and five screws are located along the inside edge.

  • Remove the bottom screws with a Phillips head screwdriver. Open the door to the glove compartment and remove the remaining five screws.

  • Place the flat-head screwdriver under the clip on the right panel of the glove compartment and pry up. This will remove the clip. Pull the glove compartment out of the dash and set it aside.

  • Push on the tabs for the filter cover behind the glove compartment. Take the cover off and set it aside.

  • Pull the old filter out of the compartment and throw it away. Insert the new filter into the compartment by aligning the arrows on the filter.

  • Replace the filter cover and set the glove compartment back into place. Tighten all of the screws to secure the glove compartment to the dash.

  • Set the clip back on the right panel and push it until you hear it snap into place.
