How to Open the Key Fob for a Volkswagen

Opening the key fob for a Volkswagen can prove a bit daunting. In either the swtichblade or push-button key, the parts are meant to open with a little bit of pulling and separating, but often stick together. Whether you need to change your battery or just want to see what the inside of the key fob consists of, be gentle and patient while opening it. Otherwise you could damage the key fob and it won't clip back into place.

Switchblade Key

  • Open the switchblade key so that it is out of the fob unit. Find the seam that separates the two halves of the key fob--this is the separation point and goes along the lock button. Firmly grip each side of the fob to pull apart.

  • Rock the key back and forth, with each hand turning away from each other, like wringing out a towel, to loosen the key fob, if necessary.

  • Pull the two ends away from each other. Access the battery, if necessary, by following the seam that runs alongside of the "Lock" and "Unlock" buttons and pull it apart. Use your fingernails or a small, thin object, such as nail file.

Push-Button Key Fob

  • Face the push-button side of the key away from your body so that the "VW" symbol is facing you. Use your fingernail to press the small button on the right side of the fob at the top (on the metal part) to take out the extra door-lock key. Press the button in and pull up on the hook to take the key out.

  • Hold the key fob firmly in your hand and from the left side, push the top metal half towards the right. It will click when it unlocks, releasing the top part of the fob. Pull it off and set it to the side.

  • Look down into the key fob, with the "VW" symbol still facing your body. The open spot between the plastic piece and small metal bar is where you'll have to separate the key fob.

  • Turn the fob sideways. Use a small butter knife or other firm, short, sturdy object to insert in the empty spot. Hold your the fob sideways between your thumb and forefinger, being careful not to let your thumb press onto the "VW" side of the key fob--this is the side that comes off.

  • Hold the fob tightly and use the object to separate the two pieces by using the top of the object to direct the bottom to press against the "VW" side of the fob. Do not stick the object deep within the fob. You should only need the tip of the object to push the "VW" side away from the rest of the fob.
