How Do I Reset an Oil Life Gauge on a 2007 GMC Truck?

GMC made two trucks for the 2007 model-year: the Canyon, a small pickup truck, and the Sierra, the company's full-size model. Despite both vehicles being the same brand, the procedure to reset the oil-life monitor is different between them. The oil-life monitor light appears when the truck has reached its oil change interval based on its mileage. It does not automatically turn off after you change the oil. However, you can manually reset it with ease.

2007 GMC Canyon

  • Turn the ignition to "On" but do not crank the Canyon's engine. Locate the "Reset" stem on the odometer. This is the same button that toggles between the trip mileage and the odometer readings.

  • Press the "Reset" stem until "Oil Life" appears below the speedometer. The screen should flash "Oil Life" and "Reset."

  • Press and hold the stem until you hear several beeps. Turn the ignition key to "Lock" then remove it.

2007 GMC Sierra

  • Turn the ignition switch to "Run." Do not crank the Sierra's engine.

  • Push the gas pedal down fully three times within five seconds, allowing the pedal to retract each time.

  • Wait 10 seconds. The "Change Oil" light should disappear. Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
