How to Remove Salt Residue From Auto Carpet

If you live in an area that receives a good amount of snow every winter you are going to come into contact with street and sidewalk salt. This salt, although helpful at removing ice, is not kind to your vehicle. It even finds a way into your car and stains your carpet. Thankfully, the salt stains are not permanent and you may remove the residue with a few household cleaning products.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum
  • Water
  • Carpet shampoo
  • Bucket
  • Bristle cleaning brush
  • Soft cloths
  • Vacuum the carpets to remove any loose salt and dirt.

  • Combine water with the carpet shampoo in a bucket. A few tablespoons in a bucket of water is enough. Dip your bristle brush into the mixture, then rub over the carpet to scrape and remove the salt.

  • Leave the mixture on the stained areas of the carpet for a while. This allows the shampoo to work its way into the fibers, softening the salt's hold on the carpet.

  • Dab at the area with a soft cloth. This removes the shampoo and the remainder of the salt.

  • Dry off the carpet with another clean cloth.
