How to Break Down a Tire From the Rim

If you own a car or tractor that has rubber tires, you undoubtedly will have to replace a tire at some point in time. In order to replace the tire, you will have to get it off the rim. This can require a bit of work, depending on the size of the tire, but can be done by virtually anyone. The bigger the tire, the more elbow grease it will take, but it still is relatively simple to do.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • Lug nut wrench
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • 2 flat crowbars
  • Pull the vehicle onto a solid surface, such as a cement driveway. Roll the floor jack under the vehicle and position the lift under the frame as close to the tire you are removing as possible. Jack up the car until the tire is completely off the ground.

  • Remove the lug nuts from the rim with a lug nut wrench and take the rim off the vehicle.

  • Release all the air from the tire by opening the air valve stem cap and push the release valve in with a flat-head screwdriver. The release valve is the small metal rod in the middle of the air valve.

  • Lay the tire flat on the ground and insert the flat end of a crowbar in between the tire and the rim. Push the crowbar down and insert a second crowbar right next to the first. Slowly begin working your way around the rim by pushing one crowbar down and sliding the other as far as you can. Continue until the first side of the tire is off the rim.

  • Pull the tire up so the entire rim is exposed and insert the first crowbar between the tire and rim from the rim side of the tire. Push the crowbar down and insert the second. Repeat the process you followed to remove the first half until the tire is off the rim completely.
