How to Add Fluid to a Convertible Mustang

When it's time to add fluid to your convertible Mustang, keep in mind that you must check several different places to ensure all of the necessary fluids are added to the engine. Check the oil, radiator, brake and washer fluid levels. Keeping all fluids topped off is important since the convertible mustang is considerably heavier then the coupe Mustang. The extra weight adds stress to the engine, and properly maintained fluid levels will help reduce that stress.

Things You'll Need

  • Funnel
  • Windshield fluid
  • Brake fluid
  • Antifreeze
  • 5W-30 engine oil
  • Safety glasses and gloves

Windshield Fluid

  • Open the engine hold by pulling on the hood release latch that is located on the driver's side kick panel. Prop the hood up with the hood prop.

  • Locate the filler spout for the windshield fluid. It is located to the left of the radiator overflow tank at the front of the engine.

  • Open the cap and inspect the tube for fluid. There is no level indicator or dipstick for the windshield fluid. Add fluid if you cannot see fluid in the filler spout.

  • Place a small funnel into the filler spout and add windshield wiper fluid. Secure the lid onto the filler spout once filled.

Brake Fluid

  • Park the Mustang on level ground, open the engine hood and then locate the master cylinder or "brake cylinder." It is located on the driver's side firewall in the engine compartment. It is a white semi-clear plastic container with a black plastic top and will be labeled "brake."

  • Inspect the right hand side of the master cylinder. On the side there is a level indicator. If the fluid inside the master cylinder is below the "full" indicator, add fluid.

  • Remove the master cylinder cap by turning it counter-clockwise.

  • Place a small amount of fluid into the master cylinder until the fluid level rises to the "full" indicator. Secure the lid back onto the master cylinder.

Radiator Fluid

  • Park the Mustang on flat ground, open the engine hood and locate the radiator overflow tank. The radiator is located in the front of the engine compartment and the overflow tank is located to the left of the radiator.

  • Inspect the left hand side of the overflow tank for the level indicator. If the antifreeze fluid inside of the overflow tank is below the "full" indicator, add more fluid.

  • Open the overflow tank and add antifreeze until the fluid reaches the "full" indicator. Do not open the overflow tank or radiator cap if the engine is warm. The radiator is pressurized and can spray hot fluid if the lid is opened while the engine is hot. Wait until the engine is cool before opening the cap.

Oil

  • Make sure the Mustang is on flat ground, open the engine hood and locate the oil dipstick on the driver's side of the engine. Pull the dipstick out and inspect it for fluid level. The dipstick has a knurled (raised) section on it. The oil should be within the knurled section of the dipstick. If the oil level is below normal, add oil to the engine.

  • Locate the oil filler cap that is located on the driver's side valve cover. Remove the cap and place a funnel into the hole. Add a small amount of 5W-30 oil. Allow one to two minutes for the oil to drain into the oil pan.

  • Check the dipstick for fluid level. Again, the oil should be within the knurled section of the dipstick. Add 5W-30 oil as needed until the level of fluid is correct.
