Self Installation of Spark Plug Wires for Honda Civic

The spark-plug wires for your Honda Civic deliver the electrical spark that the engine needs to run properly. The Civic uses a distributor assembly to distribute the power to the spark plugs. The plugs, run between the distributor and the engine. When the plug wires malfunction, your engine simply will not run. Problems associated with poor spark-plug wires are hard starting and misfiring. You should check and replace your spark-plug wires every 30,000 miles. Replacement plug wires can be purchased from most auto-parts stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement spark-plug wires
  • Open the hood of your Civic and locate the spark-plug wires on the top of your engine.

  • Grab a spark-plug wire by the end of the wire (on the top of the engine) and wiggle it back and forth while pulling it up and out of the engine. Change only one spark-plug wire at a time, replacing each completely before moving on to the next one to prevent connecting a wire in an improper position on the engine or distributor and to avoid mixing up the firing order of the engine.

  • Trace the wire back to the distributor.

  • Grab the distributor end of the wire and pull it off the distributor electrode.

  • Press the new spark-plug wire end over the distributor electrode (the small cap on the plug wire), and then press the other end down into the engine's plug well over the top of the spark plug. Make sure the plug wire is secure at both ends.
