How to Replace a Car Key Fob

Many late model vehicles come with the latest remote technology. Start, lock and security functions work through a wireless connection to a key fob that comes with the vehicle. If you lose the key fob, you'll will want to replace it as quickly as possible. Fortunately, it's not a terribly complicated process.

Things You'll Need

  • Vehicle information (make, model, year)
  • Dealer
  • Contact the dealer you purchased the vehicle from or a local dealer that sells your model of vehicle. Inquire about the availability and cost to replace a key fob for your car. If the dealer does not have what you need, try an online seller. An example is included in the Resources section.

  • Get inside the vehicle with your replacement key fob and follow the programming instructions. You will have to insert the key into the ignition and turn it to the on position.

  • Perform the actions required to connect your vehicle to a new key fob. These actions include turning the lights on and off and activating the radio, windshield wipers and brakes.
