How to Replace a Headlight on a Mazda 626

If the headlight on your Mazda 626 burns out while you're driving, you could end up in a car accident. While it's rare that both headlights burn out, even one could impair your visibility. You can take preventative measures by checking and replacing the headlight bulbs every two years to minimize the chances of this happening. Replacement headlight bulbs for your 626 are 9004-style halogen headlights and are available from most auto-parts stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement headlight bulbs
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Open the hood of your 626 and remove the connector from the back of the headlight. Push down on the small, plastic release tab on the top of the headlight connector and pull it off of the headlight.

  • Pry the rubber dust cover from the back of the headlight housing.

  • Loosen, but do not remove, the screw that holds the spring clip on the back of the headlight in place.

  • Pull the spring clip off the back of the headlight. It won't come off all of the way, but that's OK. It will come off just enough to remove the headlight.

  • Pull the headlight out of the headlight housing and install the new headlight. Installation is the reverse of removal.
