How to Replace the Headlamp Bulb on a 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport

The 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport uses a sealed beam headlight system that requires removal of the entire unit to replace the headlight. The H6054 bulb contains both high beam and low beam filaments, and the bulbs are available at any auto parts store. There are a few screws to remove before the bulb will come out, but access to them is from outside the truck. Replacing both bulbs at once is recommended by most lighting manufacturers to keep the color and life of the bulbs as close as possible.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Locate the screws on the outer edges of the headlight bezel. Remove the screw using a Phillips head screwdriver. Set the screws aside.

  • Pull the bezel forward to remove it, then set it aside for now. Locate the four retaining ring screws under the bezel. There are two above and two below the light. Remove them with a Phillips head screwdriver. Do not take out the two screws on the right and left vertical edge of the bulb or the one on the top center. These are adjusting screws, and you will have to re-aim the lights if you remove them.

  • Pull the retaining ring off the bulb then pull the bulb forward. Disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the bulb; it pulls straight off with a little effort. Discard the old bulb.

  • Plug the electrical connector into the back of the new H6054 bulb and place the retaining ring around the bulb. Push it into place on the front of the Jeep then install the four retaining screws and tighten them with a screwdriver.

  • Position the headlight bezel around the light and install the retaining screws. Tighten the screws with a Phillips head screwdriver but do not over-tighten them or you will crack the plastic bezel. Move to the second bulb on the opposite side of the truck and repeat the process.
