How to Replace a Power Steering Pump in a Pontiac Sunfire

A Pontiac Sunfire is a compact car with a four-cylinder engine. The power steering pump is located on the driver's side of the engine behind the power steering pump pulley. The power steering pump pulley will need to be removed from the engine to gain excess to the power steering pump. You will need to know some basic knowledge of the engine in this vehicle to correctly complete this job.

Things You'll Need

  • Pulley tool
  • Power drill
  • Wrench
  • Ratchet set
  • New power steering pump
  • Power steering pump fluid
  • Open the hood of the Sunfire and locate the power steering pump and power steering pulley. Place the pulley tool over the front of the power steering pump pulley. Place the securing nut in the center of the pulley into the turning key in the center of the pulley tool. Connect the tip of the power drill to the pulley tool and tighten the power drill's tip using the power drill's key. Pull the trigger on the power drill to loosen the pulley's nut.

  • Pull the drive belt off of the power steering pump pulley. Pull the power steering pump pulley off of the engine. Place the drain cup under the power steering pump fluid reservoir. Using the wrench loosen the securing nut holding the power steering pump hose in place. Pull the hose off of the reservoir and let the fluid drain into the drain cup.

  • Remove the bolts on the sides of the power steering pump reservoir and pull the reservoir off of the engine. Remove the bolts on the side of the power steering pump using the ratchet set. Pull the power steering pump off of the engine.

  • Place the new power steering pump on the engine. Replace the securing bolt to the new power steering pump. Replace the power steering pump fluid reservoir to the engine. Replace the securing bolts to the reservoir. Reconnect the power steering pump hose to the power steering pump. Replace the pulley to the engine and replace the drive belt to the pulley.

  • Pour new power steering pump fluid into the reservoir to fill it. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel to the right and left a few times to circulate the new fluid.
