How to Change a Headlight Bulb in a 2002 Oldsmobile Aurora

The 2002 Oldsmobile Aurora was part of the Aurora's second generation. The headlights on the previous Aurora generation (1995 to 1999) were notoriously difficult to replace. Fortunately, the headlights on the second-generation Aurora aren't that hard to replace, although the procedure still requires removal of the headlight case. Change your headlight bulbs as soon as they burn out to prevent impaired night driving or possibly a traffic ticket for improper equipment. \

Things You'll Need

  • Socket or adjustable wrench
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Replacement bulb
  • Obtain replacement bulb number 9005 (for the low-beam) or 9006 (high-beam) and gather the required tools. These are common bulb types; you can purchase them at auto parts stores and many general-merchandise retailers.

  • Pull the Aurora's inside hood release. Open the hood and support it with the rod, if the Aurora doesn't have automatic support struts.

  • Inspect the area above the headlight case to find two bolts per side. Remove the two bolts with a standard socket or an adjustable wrench.

  • Insert the flat-head screwdriver between the headlight case and the outboard mounting pin (close to the fender). Push up to release the pin from the headlight case; slide the headlight case toward you. Unplug the wiring harness from the back of the case. The inboard (closest to the center of the grille) bulb is the low-beam bulb; the outboard (closest to the fender) bulb is the high-beam bulb.

  • Lift the tab on the rear of the bulb, then turn the bulb counterclockwise to remove it. Insert the new bulb without touching the glass portion; turn it clockwise to install it. Plug the wiring harness into the rear.

  • Reinsert the headlight case; line up the tracks on the bottom portion of the headlight mount with the tracks on the bottom of the headlight case. Reattach the mounting pin and tighten the two bolts to finish.
