How to Replace Windshield Wipers in a Honda Civic

Windshield wipers on a Honda Civic are designed to be removed and replaced very easily. Honda's engineer's designed such basic tasks with people who don't have a lot of technical know-how in mind. Replacing your own windshield wipers saves you the cost of going to a mechanic. All you need are new wipers--available at any auto parts store--plus about 5 minutes of your time.

  • Turn off your car and set the emergency brake. You should never attempt even perfunctory repairs while the car is running.

  • Pull the wiper arm up from the windshield. It should pull back easily and remain in place once you let it go.

  • Find the lock tab holding the blades in place. In Honda Civics, it can be found on the plastic device connecting the blade apparatus to the metal of the wiper arms. Depress and hold it, then slide the blade apparatus towards the base of the wiper arm. It should come right off. The lock tab can be a bit stiff, so if you can't depress it with your finger, use the end of a key or a screwdriver blade.

  • Depress the two tabs on the end of the wiper blade--these connect the blades themselves to the frame of the apparatus--and pull the blade free.

  • Check the new blades for reinforcement strips, the long thin pieces of metal or plastic along the sides. Many blades have them, but some blades--especially discount brands--will not. (The packaging should tell you, and if it doesn't you can ask someone at the store when you buy them.) If they don't have them, carefully pull the old strips free of the used wiper and slip them into the grooves along the sides of the new wiper.

  • Slide the new blade back into the blade apparatus. The tabs should lock when you are done, holding it in place.

  • Place the blade apparatus back onto the wiper arm between the crook in the metal. The lock tab should click when it is in place.

  • Carefully push the wiper arm back down against the windshield. Turn the Honda's power on and activate the windshield wipers to test them.
