How to Replace the Heater Core in a Mitsubishi Galant

Replacing a heater core in your Mitsubishi Galant sounds simple enough, but there is a lot more to it. You must remove several items from the interior just to reach the core, primarily the instrument panel itself. Check with your mechanic before proceeding with anything this complex.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement heater core
  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Engine coolant

Removal

  • Disconnect the negative cable from the battery and wait one minute for the air bag system to deplete. Drain the cooling system and discharge the air conditioner refrigerant. Make sure the front tires are facing straight.

  • Take out the Galant's front seat and the glove box assembly. Remove the instrument panel parcel box and glovebox lock. Remove the hood release handle.

  • Disassemble and remove the instrument panel. This includes removing all side covers, panels, electrical connections, the sound system. center and floor consoles, air bags and steering wheel. Have another person help remove the dashboard.

  • Disconnect the strut tower bar if one is equipped, then remove the battery and air cleaner body. Remove the heater hoses and air conditioner lines from the evaporator.

  • Remove the rear heat duct, then remove the heater unit and deck crossmember. Remove the heater core from the heater case.

Installation

  • Install the replacement core into the heater case. Replace the heater unit, deck crossmember, rear heat duct, heater hoses, air conditioner lines, air cleaner body, battery and strut tower bar.

  • Reassemble the complete instrument panel, steering assembly and seats.

  • Refill the cooling system with the correct grade and type coolant. Use fresh coolant if the old liquid is not of good quality. Recharge the air conditioner with its refrigerant.
