How to Replace a Clockspring in a Chrysler Town & Country

The clockspring provides the electrical connection to the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, or airbag, in your Chrysler Town and Country. The clockspring may require replacement when the airbag light stays on or the horn or speed controls on the steering wheel stop working properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Steering wheel puller
  • Take the negative battery cable off of the negative terminal. Secure the cable so that it makes no connection to the terminal while you replace the clockspring in your Chrysler Town & Country.

  • Let the capacitor discharge for at least two minutes before you begin your repair. Align the wheels of your Chrysler Town & Country so that they point straight ahead.

  • Rotate the key in the ignition until you reach the "Lock" position, and take the key out of the ignition. Turn the steering wheel of your Chrysler Town and Country counterclockwise until the steering wheel locks into place on the steering column.

  • Locate the three bolts holding the airbag onto the steering wheel. Remove the bolts and pull the airbag off of the steering wheel. Disconnect the electrical connections to the horn, speed control and the airbag of your Chrysler Town and Country.

  • Undo the clip from the airbag supports that routes the wiring harness connections. Remove the nut that holds the steering wheel in place on your Chrysler Town and Country and take off the damper from the steering wheel.

  • Use a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel and expose the clockspring. Remove the clockspring and replace it with a new mechanism. Ensure proper centering of the new clockspring in your Chrysler Town & Country to allow for proper execution of the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint system.

  • Replace the steering wheel and airbag module by performing the above steps in reverse.
