If your 2005 through 2007 Lincoln Navigator is hard to stop or your brake light is coming on while you're driving the SUV, then it may be time to replace your front disc brakes. This maintenance may prevent costly or dangerous results in the long run, such as an automobile accident.
Use a suction device to remove the brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir until it's down to half full. Jack up the Lincoln Navigator, remove the wheels and the anchor housing spring.
Release the lower portion of the anchor housing spring on the left-hand brake caliper. Apply force at the center of the anchor housing spring and pull outward at the bottom to remove it from the lower brake caliber cavity. Next, rotate the spring upward and then remove it from the brake caliper.
Disengage the upper portion of the anchor housing spring for the RH brake. Remove the anchor housing spring from the upper brake caliper cavity by applying force at the center and pulling outward at the top of the anchor housing spring. Next, rotate the spring downward and then remove it from the brake caliper.
Remove the brake caliper by taking off the zero drag string, anchor plate bolts, guide pins and boots. Throw away the guide pins. Disengage the brake pads from the brake caliper. Compress the brake caliper pistons using a C-clamp or similar tool.
Clean the inner surfaces of the brake caliper where the brake pads attach. Install new brake hardware by installing the guide pin bushings into the caliper bores, applying grease to the inside of the guide pin bushings and pushing the guide pins into the bushing. Don't apply grease to the guide pin threads.
Install the Lincoln Navigator's inboard pad into the brake caliper and then the outboard pad. Put the brake caliper onto the brake disc. Tighten the guide pins and install the dust caps and zero drag spring.
Insert the tab of the anchor housing spring into the brake caliper cavity. Next, on the left-hand side, twist the tab into the upper brake caliper cavity. On the right-hand side, twist the tab into the lower brake caliper cavity.
Rotate the anchor housing spring and position the upper portion onto the anchor plate. Push down and inward until the upper and lower ends of the anchor housing spring are latched and seated, resting in the brake caliper cavities.
Ensure that the anchor housing spring latched correctly. Bleed the brake system and fill the brake master cylinder reservoir, as required. Reattach the wheels and lower the Lincoln Navigator. Prior to operating the SUV, depress the brake pedal a few times until the brake pads are seated against the rotor.
