How to Replace Valve Cover Gasket in a Pontiac Grand Prix

The Pontiac Grand Prix was designed to offer performance for the owner. To keep the Grand Prix performing at it's best, some maintenance is required. One of the really important maintenance steps is to replace the valve cover gasket when it becomes necessary.

  • Remove the battery Terminals. Locate the valve cover gaskets on the left side. Remove Ignition Control Module (ICM) and Ignition Coil wires. Unplug heated oxygen sensor (Ho2S). Unplug manifold Absolute Pressure sensor (Map). Remove valve cover bolts. Remove valve cover. Remove old Gasket.

  • Locate right side of the engine and remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. Remove spark plug wires. Unplug camshaft position (CMP) sensor connector. Remove valve cover bolts. Remove valve cover and gasket. Clean valve cover with the automotive engine cleaner.

  • Install new valve cover gasket on right and left sides. Reinstall valve cover. Replace valve cover bolts. Do not over tighten or the gasket will not fit correctly. Reconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor, spark plug wires and the PCV valve.

  • Reconnect the Ignition Control Module (ICM), Ignition Coil wires, heated oxygen sensor (Ho2S) and the manifold Absolute Pressure sensor (Map). Put oil in the oil container on the engine.

  • Start the engine and allow the car to run idle for a while.
