Oxygen Sensor Location on a 97 Chevy Lumina

The Lumina was introduced by Chevrolet in 1990 as a replacement for the Celebrity and to compete with the popular Ford Taurus. The 1997 Lumina is part of the second generation of this model, which lasted until 2001, when it was finally replaced by the Impala. The Lumina has two O2 sensors. On the base 3.1-liter engine, the first is on the rear exhaust manifold, and the second is just behind the catalytic converter and is used to monitor the catalytic converter's efficiency.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 3/8-inch 6-inch extension
  • O2 sensor socket
  • Torque-wrench
  • Thread Chaser
  • New oxygen sensor
  • Open the hood and locate the O2 sensor on the rear manifold, just before the exhaust outlet. Before proceeding, ensure the engine has cooled to temperature below 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray the sensor with penetrating oil and allow it to sit for a least 20 minutes. Disconnect the electrical connector from the O2 sensor. Inspect the connector for damage to the pin or connector. If you find any damage or corrosion, replace the connector.

  • Loosen and remove the oxygen sensor from the exhaust, using the ratchet, extension, and O2 sensor socket. Run the thread chaser through the threads to clean them up. Inspect the new oxygen sensor to ensure the treads are coated with 02 sensor anti-seize. This is a special anti-seize compound of graphite suspended in glass beads and liquid. Once the O2 sensor reaches operating temperature, the graphite will burn away, leaving only the glass beads.

  • Install the oxygen sensor and torque it to 31-foot pounds, using the torque-wrench, extension, and O2 sensor socket. Connect the electrical connector and secure it to the retaining bracket. Clear the codes in the PCM through the code reader. Or disconnect the battery and pump the brake pedal several times. Then reconnect the battery. Note: If you use this method, all presets in the vehicle will be lost and have to be reset. Start the engine and run it to operating temperature. Ensure the Service Engine Soon Lamp is not illuminated.
