How to Install a Ford Flexplate

The flexplate on a Ford vehicle serves two important functions. The first is to help balance the rotating assembly (crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons). The other is to serve as a cranking gear for the engine starter. The flexplate is located in between the engine and transmission torque converter. Installation involves partial removal of the transmission as well as the engine starter. The installation process should take less than four hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Complete set of US and Metric wrenches and sockets
  • Torque wrench
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable to protect the vehicle's electronic systems from damage. Raise the front of the Ford using a floor jack and stands, or use a vehicle hoist to raise the entire vehicle.

  • Support the transmission from beneath using a wheeled floor jack. Remove the transmission bell housing. Remove all electrical and mechanical linkages connecting the transmission to the engine. Remove the driveshaft yoke bolts and disconnect the driveshaft. Move the transmission rearwards as far as possible.

  • Remove the six flexplate mounting bolts and pull the old flexplate off the engine. Position the new flexplate exactly like the old one. Install and torque the flexplate mounting bolts to 64 foot-pounds.

  • Perform steps 1 and 2 in reverse order to reassemble the vehicle.
