How to Replace a Convertible Rear Window

Rear windows are a structurally important part of a vehicle, helping to hold the top of the car together. As a result, they need to be intact at all times or you reduce the safety rating of your vehicle. Like any windows, though, the rear windows can be damaged and need to be replaced. Replacing a convertible rear window is slightly different than replacing a rear window on a standard vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Window trim removal tool
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Rubber cement
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Cloths
  • Rags
  • Double-sided tape
  • Unhook the convertible top and raise it up a few inches from the back windshield. Slide the plastic window trim removal tool between the existing window and the black trim holding it in place. Move it around the window under the trim and carefully pry the trim up. Pull up on the trim by hand to remove it from the windshield.

  • Pop off the metal clip located at the bottom center of the window with a flat head screwdriver. Loosen the support clip on the inside of the car and pop it off from the outside. Unzip the existing window and carefully set it aside and out of the way.

  • Clean the area where the window was located with rubbing alcohol to remove any cement that helped hold the window in place. Scrub the entire are where the window was with a clean cloth to get any left over residue out of the way. Dry thoroughly with a clean rag.

  • Set the new window in place in the opening. Move to the inside of the car and have somebody hold the window in place from the outside. Zip the window into place from the inside of the car while it is being held from the outside.

  • Insert the provided metal clip where the old one was installed to make sure the window does not come out of the zipper. Snap it into place from the outside and install the support plate on the inside of the car. Add double-sided tape over the clip and add rubber cement to the cloth on the edge of the window along the outside to help hold the trim in place.

  • Apply the trim to the window by pushing it into place with the trim removal tool. Secure it in place and so it can adhere to the rubber cement and shut the window. Leave it shut for 24 hours so it can properly adhere.
