How to Replace a Nissan Sway Bar Link

A sway bar is a simple device that enhances the handling and stability of a car. Almost all cars, including Nissans, use some type of sway bars on the suspension. The sway bar is bolted to either side of a Nissan's suspension. Some models use a bar at the front and rear, while others use only one at the front. The sway bar is fastened at either end with a link that comes off the bar at 90 degrees and bolts to the suspension.

Things You'll Need

  • Ramps
  • Socket set and ratchet
  • Open ended wrenches
  • Drive the end of the car up onto ramps where you are replacing the end link. If you are replacing a front sway bar link, the front of the car will need to be raised to access the underside of the car.

  • Locate the sway bar and the end link. The sway bar is a cylindrical length of metal that stretches from one side of a Nissan to the other. It is fastened to the chassis in the center section with brackets. The end links are bolted to the bar at one end and to the suspension at the other.

  • Loosen and remove the not that fastens to the link to the sway bar. The exact method that the link is bolted to the bar will vary depending on the model of Nissan. Pull the threaded stud on the end of the link off of the sway bar.

  • Loosen and the remove the nut that fastens the link to the suspension at the opposite end. You may need to use a wrench on both sides, one to hold the bolt so that it does not rotate and the other to loosen the nut. Withdraw the link from the suspension, noting the order and presence of any washers, spacers and bushings.

  • Install the new end link by bolting it to the suspension. If needed, transfer any washers, spacers and bushings to the new link if they are not already installed on the new link. Bolt the opposite end of the link to the sway bar. Tighten all of the hardware. Lower the car back to the ground.
