Water Leak in a Jeep Liberty

The Jeep Liberty is Jeep's compact sport utility vehicle. Water leaks in the Liberty can indicate anything from bad weather sealing to serious engine problems. A simple checklist can help diagnose the problems and avoid potentially expensive repairs.

Engine Bay Leaks

  • Carefully look around the engine bay for crusty green deposits caused by dried coolant. Check the radiator cap to make sure it is tightly closed and examine the hoses that run from the radiator to the water pump. If these hoses rip or tear, they can leak coolant. Check the left and right end pieces of the radiator to see if they have cracked or are damaged-these are common areas of failure on modern cooling systems. Finally, check the coolant reservoir itself, it may have cracked or is leaking along the plastic seam.

Interior Cabin Leaks

  • A typical culprit for water leaking into the interior of a Jeep Liberty are poor weather seals on the doors. Open your doors and carefully examine the black rubber weather sealing that lines the door; if it has come loose, has been torn, or is missing, water will seep into the cabin when it rains. You can order replacement weather strips from your dealer to replace any damaged sealing.

Unexplained Water Loss

  • If you find no leaks, no puddles under your Liberty, and still find that it is losing water, you may have water seeping into your oil due to an internal engine problem such as a leaking head gasket. In these situations the water is being ingested into the engine, not leaked onto the ground. This is an extremely serious problem and you should take your Liberty to a dealership, or an independent shop immediately. Your mechanic can run a compression test on the head to determine whether there is a leak.
