How Do I Put a Car Window in a Nissan Altima?

Nissan offers an assortment of models in its Altima line. These cars come equipped with many popular options and features, including power windows. With regular use over time or as the result of a collision, one or more of the windows may need to be replaced. Replacing the window on an Altima is no different than replacing the power window on any other car. A few basic steps must be followed and, with a little patience, you can complete this project and have a brand new window installed in about an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Putty knife
  • Socket wrench
  • Screws
  • Insert a flat-head screwdriver under the electric window switch and carefully pry it up. Remove the two screws holding the armrest in place using a Phillips-head screwdriver.

  • Slide a putty knife between the door panel and the door. Locate the clips holding the door in place and pry them loose. Move all the way around the door until the all of the clips have been popped free. Pull up carefully on the door panel to lift it off the door frame and set it aside for later reassembly.

  • Put on heavy work gloves to prevent injury from handling glass. Then, pull up on the old window glass and remove it from the door frame. Throw the old glass away or recycle it.

  • Slide the new window glass into the opening and push it gently down to the bottom of the door. Hold the top so that a few inches remain above the window opening. Line up the clips on the bottom of the window to the slot in the door opening where it will attach to the frame.

  • Set a screw into the hole on the window clip and tighten it down by hand to secure the window clip to the door panel. Repeat the process for the other window clip. Tighten the screws securely with a Phillips-head screwdriver and a socket wrench.

  • Test the window to make sure it raises and lowers properly. Move it all the way up and all the way down to ensure it remains on its track and closes properly. Reattach the door panel following the disassembly steps in reverse.
