How to Install a GM TH400 Transmission

The Turbo Hydra Matic 400 is a four speed, automatic transmission originally installed in fullsize General Motors cars in the mid sixties. The transmission has stood the test of time and continues to perform well in all manner of racing vehicles, from drag strip to dirt track. Any do-it-yourself mechanic can successfully complete the installation in under two hours. No special tools or parts are required.

Things You'll Need

  • Vehicle jack and stands
  • Complete set of US and metric wrenches and sockets
  • Support the bottom of the transmission with a rolling floor jack and allign the bellhousing with the rear of the engine block. Slowly guide the transmission up against the engine, ensuring that the crankshaft output shaft fits into the torque converter input. Make sure that the converter-to-flex plate bolt holes are alligned as well.

  • Install and torque the bellhousing-to-engine bolts to 23 foot pounds. Install and torque the converter-to-flex plate bolts to 46 foot pounds. Install and torque the transmission-to-crossmember bolts to 32 foot pounds. Install and torque the transmission-to-rear mount bolts to 32 foot pounds.

  • Install the shift linkage rod located on the passenger side of the transmission. Use anti-seize compound on the bolt and snug the nut down. Install both oil cooler pipes along the passenger side of the transmission and tighten the securing nuts. Attach the rubber vacuum line to the nipple of the vacuum modulator. Install the speedometer cable and tighten the integral nut on the end linkage.

  • Slide the drive shaft into the rear of the transmission and torque the four retaining bolts to 45 foot pounds.

  • Add nine quarts of new transmission fluid.
