Ford produced the AOD four-speed automatic transmission for its 1980s and 1990s production cars, including Lincoln, Mercury and the F-Series pick-up trucks. In 1993 the automaker came out with the AOD-E with electronic overdrive.
The AOD automatic was featured in V-6 and V-8-equipped full-size 1980 to 1992 Fords and Mercurys, 1984 to 1993 Mustangs and Mercury Cougars and Capris, Broncos with the 5-liter V-8, 1981 to 1993 F-Series pickups and E-Series vans and 1980 to 1993 Lincolns, according to Hemmings.
The standard AOD four-speed automatic had a 2.40-to-1 first gear ratio, 1.47-to-1 for second, 1.00-to-1 for third and 0.67-to-1 for fourth or overdrive. The gear ratios are near the 2.46-to-1 ratio on the C-4 and C-6 three-speed transmissions that Ford replaced with the AOD in 1986. The AOD four-speed wide-ratio version had gear ratios of 2.84-to-1, 1.55-to1, 1.00-to-1 and 0.67-to-1. Ford used the wide ratio AOD on performance Mustang and some trucks.
The AOD automatic features a 14-bolt pattern and a neutral safety switch mounted on the driver's side of the case above the valve body. Its speedometer drive cable hooks on the driver's side to the speed sensor. The AOD weighed about 40 pounds more than the C-4 and C-6 versions at 150 pounds.
