How to Remove Tonneau

A tonneau cover over the bed of a pickup truck is a useful aftermarket addition for truck owners. It keeps the vehicle looking streamlined while covering any items in the back from the elements. If the tonneau cover has a lock, it helps protect the driver's possessions. Two standard varieties of tonneau cover exist. A soft cover, domed or zippered to the truck bed, allows for removal in a matter of seconds. The hard style is mounted to the bed and takes a little longer to remove.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver or wrench
  • Three assistants
  • Turn the vehicle off, and unlock the tonneau cover. Lower the tailgate.

  • Open the tonneau cover by lifting up on its back end. It will now rise on its hinges to roughly a 45-degree angle above the truck bed.

  • Unscrew the mounting brackets located at each of the four corners of the truck bed. Depending on the brand of the tonneau cover you use, screws or bolts may hold it in place, requiring either a screwdriver or wrench. Some tonneau covers are held in place by pins, which you must remove.

  • Recruit three assistants, and have each stand at one corner of the tonneau cover.

  • Lift the cover straight up, and walk toward the back of the vehicle until you have freed the cover from the truck bed.
